Munich, Germany - Striking in their radical posture – already from a distance they arouse our curiosity: Extremely rare examples of cars bearing the star symbol of Mercedes-Benz. The Legion of Honor hosts Women Impressionists ~ Morisot, Cassatt, Gonzales, Bracquemond SAN FRANCISCO, CA - In a day when a woman leads the House of Representatives and another campaigns for President of the United States, it might be hard to imagine a time when the work of four women painters was marginalized because of strict social rules and the artists’ gender. For many decades, the four artists celebrated in Women Impressionists: Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Eva Gonzalès, Marie Bracquemond were treated with critical ambivalence and lacked major public exhibitions. It is only now that their innovative styles and contributions to Impressionism are showcased in a groundbreaking exhibition this summer at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, the exclusive U.S. venue. Women Impressionists is on view from June 21 to September 21, 2008.

Featuring 46 works, including paintings, works on paper, the exhibition marks the first time these pieces, now in public and private collections across the country, have been exhibited together since they were created more than 50 years ago. The Phillips Collection is the final venue for the exhibition, which opens on June 21 and remains on view through Sept. 7, 2008.

Political Architecture Debate Underscores the Complex Decisions of Designing Architecture NY TIMES - FOUR months ago the architect Daniel Libeskind declared publicly that architects should think long and hard before working in China, adding, “I won’t work for totalitarian regimes.” His remarks raised hackles in his profession, with some architects accusing him of hypocrisy because his own firm had recently broken ground on a project in Hong Kong. In the long run does architecture transcend politics and ideology? If the architect’s own vision is progressive, can architecture be a vehicle for positive change?

Analysing Paintings

"Analysing paintings" is an online tutorial that introduces the tools and techniques of formal art analysis. Developed with students of modern languages in mind - who may be taking a module in the visual arts but have no prior knowledge of art analysis - the tutorial is nonetheless suitable for anyone interested in learning more about art.
Divided into clear sections, which allow students to dip in and out of the course as they see fit, the tutorial covers some of the key aspects of form, such as: colour and line; space and perspective; light; composition; portraiture; and medium and support. Examples ranging from medieval to modern works of art are provided throughout (by means of links to external online art galleries), together with guided activities.

Research at Gray's School of Art

The website divides research practices into four themes: Art and the Public Sphere – concerned with the development of cultural meaning and value; Challenging Making - exploring the poetics of form through individual practices responding to technological, economic and ecological change; Art and Design Pedagogy - applied research in the teaching and learning of art and design; Design Research – creative and innovative collaborations with business and service organisations.
Within these broad areas, specific projects, ranging from the exploration of the rapidly changing values of ‘craft’ to specific public art projects are described (in the website’s ‘Initiatives’ section). Additionally the website includes research staff profiles and details of past and current doctoral projects, and doctoral opportunities. The website also describes the well established ‘Guests@Grays’ lecture series which draws in a wide range of speakers from diverse international backgrounds and disciplines.
