Art Knowledge News - Keeping You in Touch with the World of Art...

The Legion of Honor hosts Women Impressionists ~ Morisot, Cassatt, Gonzales, Bracquemond SAN FRANCISCO, CA - In a day when a woman leads the House of Representatives and another campaigns for President of the United States, it might be hard to imagine a time when the work of four women painters was marginalized because of strict social rules and the artists’ gender. For many decades, the four artists celebrated in Women Impressionists: Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Eva Gonzalès, Marie Bracquemond were treated with critical ambivalence and lacked major public exhibitions. It is only now that their innovative styles and contributions to Impressionism are showcased in a groundbreaking exhibition this summer at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, the exclusive U.S. venue. Women Impressionists is on view from June 21 to September 21, 2008.

The Phillips Collection presents Diebenkorn in New Mexico, the first in-depth examination of this key time in the abstract expressionist artist’s creative development. Featuring 46 works, including paintings, works on paper, the exhibition marks the first time these pieces, now in public and private collections across the country, have been exhibited together since they were created more than 50 years ago. The Phillips Collection is the final venue for the exhibition, which opens on June 21 and remains on view through Sept. 7, 2008.

Political Architecture Debate Underscores the Complex Decisions of Designing Architecture NY TIMES - FOUR months ago the architect Daniel Libeskind declared publicly that architects should think long and hard before working in China, adding, “I won’t work for totalitarian regimes.” His remarks raised hackles in his profession, with some architects accusing him of hypocrisy because his own firm had recently broken ground on a project in Hong Kong. In the long run does architecture transcend politics and ideology? If the architect’s own vision is progressive, can architecture be a vehicle for positive change?
